ADI-LILA. Chapter 2. The Supreme Lord in His Primordial Form. Verses 47-53

Bhakti Chaitanya Bharati Swami, August 24, 2017

05:34

[…] Well, Brahma continues with his arguments that Krishna is not just a god but even higher than the Lord. Brahma says,

Your eyes can see all paths of all living beings, so You are their primordial patron, Narayana.

(47)  ‘Oh Brahma, your words are inconceivable for Me. Narayana is internally present in all living beings and He is lying on the waters of the Causal Ocean’, Krishna said.

‘You are right, my Lord, Brahma replied. – Narayana lying in the Ocean is present in every living being and is Your manifestation.’

‘You manifest Yourself in three forms of Vishnu, who is Karana, the cause of the universe, Garbha, the ancestor father of the universe, and Ksira, the origin of life. By means of them You get in touch with the creating substance of maya.’

Vishnu is a position as well which means ‘supporting/sustaining’ or ‘the almighty’. There’re three modes to sustain the whole world, those heaps of universal bubbles. Vishnu Karana, also called Karanodakashayi, is the cause of the universe. Then, there is a sustainer, also a universal form within each ‘bubble’, each universal egg; the name of this sustainer is Garbha because the universal lotus comes out of his navel. The third Vishnu is the origin of life present as the Universe Soul in all conscious beings sustaining the living energy in them. Thus, he sustains the created world through his three forms. The highest causal Vishnu doesn’t have any lotus in his navel; he is half asleep while those bubbles are flying out from his body pores; each bubble has its own Vishnu inside lying on the causal waters with the lotus growing out of the navel to hold Brahma on top of it.

Vishnu is present in every atma. The ISKCON members interpret it as ‘in every atom’ although there’re no atoms, or molecules, quarks, sub quarks, etc.; only illusion, waves are there. Vishnu is present in every atma, not every atom, inside every conscious being. Krishna tells about two birds on the Universe Tree. One bird is you, the living being flying from branch to branch to eat sweet and bitter fruit of your deeds. The other bird is Me, Krishna says, and I am just watching you because you exist only when you are being observed. Any object exists only when an observer/onlooker exists. We often say that this seems incredible when we examine a particular object in general but as soon as we start speculating, i.e. analyzing it from a simpler point, we can find out that every particular simple or the simplest thing exists only in the mind. For example, take an apple. It seems to exist as it is despite my seeing or not seeing it. We should understand that an apple is a combination of various concepts, e.g. color, form, smell, taste, temperature, etc. I’m talking the most simple of them although there’re more complicated ones, of course, such as ‘loud’. Take an apple, tap on it, and you hear a sound. Can a sound exist outside the concept of ‘loud — silent’? Can a sound be not silent? It can. Not loud? It can because it can be low. Now, can a sound be not high and not low? We know that it cannot be so but okay, let’s name it ‘medium’. Now, let’s see whether a sound can exist without its ‘loud – silent’ faculties and the answer is, it cannot. A sound cannot exist without being heard and its being high or low is nothing but my perception. If I’m near the source it can be loud, if not it’s silent. ‘Loud – silent’ exist only within my mind.  We can analyze any object or faculties following this mode. Take color. An apple is green. Can it not be green? Yes, it can be red. Can it be not green and not red? It can be yellow. Now, let’s list colors and hues not relevant for an apple. Is color a property of an apple or is it my function as an onlooker? The color is entirely my derivative, not the apple’s; it is the faculty of the onlooker and not of the object because different people can see the color of this apple in their own way. Do you remember the online story with the dress color? The world cracked into two parties. I could definitely see that the dress was white and gold and you saw it as a blue dress. Those colors were obviously vibrating on some barely visible boundary; plus our complimentary perception. When we see, hear, touch, etc., only a small part happens to be perception; all the rest, 99% of it is completed by individual understanding. […]  Even when a person tells you the apple is green it, however, has some other hues. If this person doesn’t know the green color, for description, he will find some hues within his own experience. He might tell you this is a wrong yellow color because he knows ‘yellow’ and has never seen ‘green’. In other words, when an object is decomposed into simplest concepts we can say it exists only in the mind of the onlooker. If we don’t analyze the object we can say the apple doesn’t depend on me but, in fact, when I look at it the apple exists only in my mind.

Now, regarding this verse, as soon as we exist we also exist only in someone’s mind, in someone’s head. We don’t percept each other as we are. Similarly, with the apple case, when looking at each other we percept each other only within our personal experience. For example, we have a friend who looks like you and when I see you I percept you as a form of that friend. I can assume how you will act although I don’t know you at all, and that’s how I transfer my experience with that friend on you; I percept you from the point based on my previous experience. This is psychology stuff. Say, you want to get a new job, apply for a good position, and you need to positively impress the interviewer. So you make some research on his closest circle and dress for the interview to look like them; even better if you behave in the manner of a person whom the interviewer likes; this makes your chances higher but is not a guarantee for your success. Or you can learn about his likes in cinema or sports; anyway, you can model your behavior quite cunningly. The point is objects exist in the mind. We consider ourselves subjects but, for the Supreme Lord, we are objects and exist in His consciousness that is why it is said that He is always here with us, always observing us, not because He is much interested in but because we exist until He observes us; if He doesn’t we disappear… Objects observed exist only in the mind of the observer. No object exists without being observed by someone. No observation, no form. No form can exist apart from an observer.

LISTENER: What about a toddler, Maharaj? It has no experience but can distinguish objects.

BHARATI MAHARAJ: No, it cannot. I believe the newborns cannot distinguish things at all, can hardly percept; their senses are not focused yet.

LISTENER: People say, the newborns’ vision is upside down.

BHARATI MAHARAJ: By the way, have you thought on the fact that in the mirror we see a vertically inverted image. The picture is really inverted and we complete it. With the lens directed, the pic flips over; when we look into the mirror the pic inverts vertically, not as with the lens. A human eye is a lens and we complete the image basing on our consciousness. People, this world is illusion! The image is followed by a processor developing the image. Every iPhone has a processor which works on the image for your convenience. We’ve got a similar processor in the mind which works to release the pic vertically, not horizontally. The objects we can see exist in every given head. And we are objects as well. Who is observing us then? Hence, there is a supreme onlooker. Suppose, I lock myself in a camera obscura and am not available for cameras; I understand that I exist which means I’m being watched by someone beyond cameras. There is a supreme entity, the Supreme Observer. Once again, You manifest Yourself in three forms of Vishnu, who is Karana, the cause of the universe, Garbha, the ancestor father of the universe, and Ksira, the origin of life.’  This very origin of life observes all living beings. And ‘By means of them You get in touch with the creating substance of maya.’ Next verse,

Three entities lying on the waters are three internal origins of existence.

The first entity is the single origin of countless universes. The second one is the origin of one universe. The third one is the single origin of life.

One of Krishna’s definitions is Hrishikesha, the Soul of Life. When the soul leaves a body the body decomposes into formless substances such as liquid, fire, air, and earth. Similarly, when the Lord leaves this world it also decomposes and withdraws.

He Who is lying in the Universe Ocean is the source and soul of universal life; the all-pervading origin of life is the Single Soul of all individual living beings.

Three forms of Krishna get in touch with the material world while He Who is apart in the fourth existence never gets in touch with time, space, consciousness, nor any energy within them.

So, the Supreme Lord Krishna does not get in touch with the matter at all. For that purpose, He has indirect instruments that are three Vishnu(s), the single universal origin, the life origin in every given universe, and the single origin of life. Krishna gets in touch with all souls and non-souls through these three.  As Brahma says,He Who is apart in the fourth existence never gets in touch with time, space, consciousness, nor any energy within them’.

‘They define the Supreme Lord as all in whole, the entity beyond this world, and the cause of existence but He is the fourth. He is higher than existence without even any connection to it. (Quoted from the comments to the Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.15.16 by Sridhar Swami)

The Supreme Lord as a whole is the three-folded origin. He is all; He is every one; He is connecting all with every one; He is Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan; while Krishna is said to be even higher than Bhagavan. Krishna is just an Indian village boy but, due to His all-attractiveness and inconceivable beauty, all energies strive to be near Him, i.e. all the rest energies/properties want to be near, to belong to Him. As Scriptures put it, these properties are His devotees or His various shakti(s), His girlfriends in Vrindavan. Each of them personifies a particular property which then takes form in our material world. Under the Christian doctrine, the God has eight powers. You should mind that powers are not muscles but divine properties. Similarly, every head of state has his powers such as military, law enforcement, financial, and other institutions. The head of state has his own ways to keep them by his side because if he does not they will be gone.  Contrary to that, the shakti(s) are attracted to the Lord and desire to stay with Him on their own will. Could you imagine the constitutional subjects praying the head of state not to give them autonomy/independence? All shakti(s) ask for permission to serve the Lord beyond terms and conditions; they don’t want any reciprocation. The military and other forces serve the head of state only because he gives them different sorts of remuneration; should he stop doing that they seek another chief. Rupa Goswami says that Krishna is way over the Lord; He does not need to do anything, all shakti(s) are craving His company. That’s why our masters define Him as ‘the forth’ for whom Vishnu(s) want to be His shakti(s). So, once again,

‘They define the Supreme Lord as all in whole, the entity beyond this world, and the cause of existence but He is the fourth. He is higher than existence without even any connection to it.

Let’s stop here, on the Verse 53, and then we’ll go on.

Three forms of Krishna are related to the material world and rule the phases of its existence but getting in touch with the matter they never acquire its qualities. That is how special the Supreme Lord is.
